TOLSTOY WAS NEVER THERE

TOLSTOY WAS NEVER THERE

TOLSTOY WAS NEVER THERE is a tale of multiple mistaken identities. In 1917, Bolshevik leader Leon Trotsky (KEVIN DUNN) was illegally removed from a Russian-bound ship in Halifax harbor on the orders of Oglethorpe (JOHN O’HURLEY), a shadowy diplomat. Incarcerated in a prisoner- of-war-camp, the shell-shocked commandant, Brian Mayhew (PATRICK PINNEY), mistook Trotsky for author Leo Tolstoy and his wife Marjorie (BECKY BONAR) thought him her long- lost lover. Their daughter Stephanie (LEILA BIRCH) imagined Trotsky and his wife Natalya (KIM EVELETH) as inspirations for her stage adaptation of Anna Karenina. Her Vronsky, a fervent socialist named Irving Moskowitz (ROSS BENJAMIN), mistook Trotsky for the Messiah; his father Louis (RON ORBACH) thought him a persecuted Jew; his wife Sophie (ROSE ABDOO) was certain he was a criminal. And Kraut (ED BEGLEY JR.) made him a long-dreamt-of Feuhrer, born to lead him and his fellow prisoners in revolt against the abusive Sgt. Ripley (ENN REITEL).
